TORONTO - Tears flowed freely down the cheeks of Beverley Francis.
Emotion so choked her that she was barely able to say what she wanted Tuesday after discovering the man alleged to have killed her son Jahmeel Spence — the second son she lost to violence — also faces charges of killing three others.
"My heart hurts," she said. "Somebody else has come back and taken another piece.
"I'm shocked," Francis said when she realized there were three other families in the room with her to hear that Mark Garfield Moore, 27, is charged with killing them.
"Right now, I hate him with a passion," the usually gentle woman said of the accused killer. "He didn't know my son. The first shot killed him and he shot him six more times."
Joanna Simmons, mother of Mike James, said she prays that if the suspect has any children, "they don't end up animals like him.
"For me, the past year, I had to force myself to go on," Simmons said. "I don't feel like getting up in the morning. I basically have to force myself to live.
"Hell would refuse him," she said of the accused.
"I hope he gets what he deserves," Dorothy Cole, wife of murder victim Carl, said. "I'll never see my husband again."
The victims' families shared family photos and spoke of tender memories.
"It's overwhelming. A big chunk of our life was taken from us," Cole said of her husband of 27 years. "Things will never be the same."
Cole's twin sister Carol said part of her is missing. "We came together in the world and we came together to Canada."
